Prevailing Wage Determination

A prevailing wage determination sets the wage for a particular job classification for public works in California.┬áThe California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) works with the State’s Labor Department to make each prevailing wage determination. These set prevailing wage rates that apply to publicly funded projects, commonly called public works.

Determinations from the DIR define pay rates by:

  • Region
  • Classification

Calculating your pay rate can be complicated if you work on multiple projects, have several job responsibilities, work on projects in different regions or counties, work overtime or travel between job sites.
