Prevailing Wage Determination

Understanding how prevailing wage is determined

A prevailing wage determination sets the wage for a particular job classification for public works in California. The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) works with the State's Labor Department to make each prevailing wage determination. These set prevailing wage rates that apply to publicly funded projects, commonly called public works.

Determinations from the DIR define pay rates by:

  • Region
  • Classification

Calculating your pay rate can be complicated if you work on multiple projects, have several job responsibilities, work on projects in different regions or counties, work overtime or travel between job sites.

Record your hours on prevailing wage jobs

It is extremely important to keep a record of your daily work times. Many prevailing wage claims benefit from this personal record of daily hours and work performed. Be sure to include any travel time, meal and rest breaks, hours worked, and work performed so it is easier to calculate overall compensation.
